2012 Calendar of Programs and Events

 

POSSIBLE HIP CLUB TRIPS FOR 2012 – Rev.  Five -   1/16/2012

 

1. Washington on the Brazos – Wildflowers and historical site - spring

2. San Antonio Missions, Riverwalk at Night, & Fireworks

4. Galveston RR Museum

5. Elisa and Galveston harbor – if it is not in dry dock

6. Sedona, AZ – 3-day week end trip – Discussing with John and Shari Argent, HIP alumni, to see if they could host trip.  Trip will have to be in Feb or March before they leave for the winter. This would include Oak Creek Canyon and possibly some ruins. Fly into Phoenix and 3 hours drive. 

7. Bolivar Peninsula – Spring time – Can include nature photography at Boy Scout Woods Rookery – charge for tripod use at the rookery

8. Dress rehearsal at Opera or Ballet

9. All day classes in the hot period of the year to fill the calendar.

10.  Civil War re-enactment at the Liendo Plantation in Hempstead, TX - November

11.  Fredericksburg, Winery, and Perdanales Falls at dusk

12.  Austin:  Downtown street life and bats (Spring or Summer)

13. Corpus Christi: Harbor at sunrise, air craft carrier, wind surfers on N. Padre Island

14. Kemah boardwalk at night:  Best on week night. Shoot the bridge at dusk and the rides at night.  Eat at restaurant after the shoot.

15.  Bayou Bend downtown walking tour hosted by Architecture Center Houston. 16. Night photography on Allen Parkway:  Shoot the bats coming out from under the Waugh Street Bridge and then car light trails with Houston downtown in the back ground.-  summer

17. Art car museum in the Heights. – Can call to see what photo restrictions there are.

18. Houston Arboretum in the spring for macro photography of flowers and bugs.

19. Night photography in the Museum District starting in the sculpture garden (no tripods allowed here)

20.  Benini Studio and Sculpture Ranch:  Located on 290 between Austin and Fredericksburg:  Unique art studio surrounded by 140 acres of hill country roads with outdoor sculptures. This can be combined with any other hill country attraction.   http://www.sculptureranch.com/visitormap.htm

21.  Week end in la Vegas: Shoot the night life and take side trips to Valley of the Fire state park, Hoover Dam etc, assuming you do not go broke in the casino.

22. Shangi La Park in Orange – return trip to shoot flowers, scenery and bird rookery.

23. Brazos Bend State Park nature photo walk – birds, flowers and lots of alligators – probably best in spring

24.  Whooping cranes boat trip out of Fulton:  half day trip out into the bay to get close up looks of birds, wild life, dolphins and whoopers.  –This would be  late February

25. Houston County Court Houses:   We could pick out perhaps 2-4 for a one day trip or make this a club project, with members volunteering for individual assignments to provide a pretty comprehensive picture book of the court houses of Texas.

26.   Star Trails, Night Sky, and Astrophotography:  We could go to Jim Stevenson’s home in West End Galveston. He has an observation tower above the house with a great 360 degree view.  His yard is a bird sanctuary so a day time – evening – night trip could be multi-purpose. (Jim may speak to the club sometime next year about his week-long bird photography workshop coming up in April 2012.)

27.  Early morning (pre-dawn into sunrise) shooting along the Gulf Coast:  Pete Romfh [promfh@hal-pc.org] has volunteered to do a class on Shooting in the Dark as a prequel.

28.   Jesse Jones Park (just north of IAH) has two history re-enactments each year.  The 2nd Saturday in Feb. is Civil War and the 2nd Saturday in November is Texas Independence. It’s not as big as Liendo Plantation but is a lot closer and not on the Thanksgiving holiday weekend.

 

 HOMESTEAD HERITAGE DAY. Sat., Feb. 11, 10 a.m.-4 p.m. bring the family for a “living history” look at 19th century Texas settler life that includes demonstrations by scores of authentically outfitted re-enactors, folk music, blacksmithing, black powder weaponry, open fire cooking, and more. 29.  Fotofest Biennial in Houston – This is a major photography exhibit that displays at multiple locations throughout the Houston down town area. This current exhibit scheduled for March 16th through April 29th will feature Russian photography.

30. Fort Hood Museums - Indoor and outdoor exhibits provide a history of the 1st Calvary Division

31. Dr. Laszio Perlaky, who is a HCP instructor, gives free monthly photo walks at Brazos Bend State Park.  These could be combined with a day of shooting.  http://www.brazosbend.org/activities/photowalk.shtml

33. Another History site to consider is George Ranch in Richmond.  http://georgeranch.org/  Their re-enactors are pretty good and the scenario covers nearly 100 years of Texas history.

34.  Visit the Rose Garden in Herman Park and work on those macro and close-up photography skills. Then to into the Natural History Museum and photograph the butterflies.    This is a good outing for January or February when the roses are in bloom.

35.  Night walk through the downtown Houston theatre district and Buffalo Bayou. 

36.  Visit the MFAH Sculpture Garden which has lots of very interesting contemporary sculptures and grounds. Also there is a nearby row of churches on Main Street.  There no tripods allowed in the garden.

37.  Visit Lost Maples State Park in Nov. or Dec.  Trees provide fall colors, creeks and ponds all provide good photo ops.

38.  Visit the George Ranch about 1 hours drive from downtown Houston.  There are great grounds and a grand old house with numerous special events through 2012 year.

39.  Shoot planes at the Ellington air show in December.

40. Shoot historical recreation of times past in Texas at the Jesse Jones Park North of Houston.  Heritage day is the Saturday in Febuary.

41.  Galveston BirdFest and Nature Photography is a 3 ˝ days event that uses the Strand as home base.  (April 12-14th)

 Register for individual lectures/courses and field trips all focused on either birding or birding photography.  Lots of ˝ day field trips are lead by local photographers.  Sign up early as these lectures/trips fill up very quickly. 

For those not interest in birds, visit the Galveston Railroad Museum and the ship Elissa.
